Vulnerable Children Society becomes a registered charity!!!

Vulnerable Children Society is proud to announce that we are now a registered Canadian charity! This means that we are now able to offer tax receipts to our wonderful sponsors and donors.

For clarity on the difference between a non-profit society and a registered charity, click here.

Tax receipts will be offered for donations or sponsorships over $30 starting on March 1, 2012. As a small volunteer-run charity, we have decided to use CanadaHelps.org to facilitate our sponsorships and donations. This means a small increase in our internal administration costs, which we consider a very reasonable expense for the receipting service provided.

NOTE: Sponsorships and monthly donations must be made through CanadaHelps in order to receive tax receipts. We simply don’t have the people-power to keep track of all our monthly donations any other way. One-time donations over $30 received via “check in the mail” will receive a tax receipt on an annual basis.

Slight changes to our Mission – our last modification for charitable status

Over the last month, we have been working very hard to answer all the questions from the Charities Directorate, complete our financial statements, create a budget for next year, and renew our partnership agreement with Faya Orphanage.

The great news? We have sent this all off via fax to the Charities Directorate, and hope to hear good news by early 2011!!!

We made a slight modification to our purposes (aka our mission) with a board of directors vote. This was in response to a request from the Charities Directorate. It’s no biggie, but we thought we would let you know. Stay posted for good news on our charitable status and tax receipts!!

The purposes of the Vulnerable Children Society are now:

  • To provide for the welfare of vulnerable children in African nations, by providing access to food, shelter, education and healthcare through local partnership organizations.
  • To enhance the quality of life for vulnerable children in African nations, by providing tools and opportunities for play, enrichment, learning, attachment, social and emotional development.
  • To build capacity in local partnering organizations that care for vulnerable African children, through mentorship, training and support.
  • To support communities and strengthen families with vulnerable children in African nations by addressing community food, water, shelter, education, sanitation and healthcare needs through local partnership organizations.
  • To facilitate donor sponsorship, and to fundraise, apply for grants and conduct revenue-generating activities to sustainably support programs and administration costs.
  • To provide similar and related services as approved by the board of directors.

Charitable Status Update

Vulnerable Children Society applied for charitable status with the Charities Directorate of Revenue Canada in March 2011. This past week we were contacted by the Charities Directorate asking for clarification on a few of our programs. They also made some small helpful suggestions to slightly change our purposes and our contract with Faya Orphanage as well, which we are following to the tee.

In order to respond to their questions, we need to complete our up-to-date year-end draft financials, as well as prepare written documents answering their questions. We hope to submit these back in the next few weeks. With any luck, we might gian charitable status and be able to issue tax receipts in early 2012! Keep your fingers crossed!!

Note that when we do start to issue tax receipts, we will most likely be asking our monthly donors and sponsors to switch their  payment agreements to a new system. We’ll keep you posted on this, after we investigate which system is best for us and you, our wonderful supporters.
