Through our partner organization in Ethiopia, Faya Orphanage, we are providing home care for vulnerable children living in the Adama ኣዳማ (also known as Nazreth ናዝሬት) , Wonji, Ambo and Guder communities.
Ethiopia is a culturally rich, but financially poor country. According to UNICEF, almost a million people in this country, including 92,000 children, are living with HIV/AIDS. Additionally, there are 650,000 children orphaned by AIDS in Ethiopia. There is overwhelming need for international aid, as traditional Ethiopian community support systems have been overrun by multiple droughts and the AIDS epidemic.
Most of the children in our community support program are HIV+; some have family members that are sick or HIV+ as well. Each family and child has an individual story, but what links the families is their inability to provide for the children’s' basic health and welfare.
Often the children live with neighbours or extended family members. Often there are many many children living under the same roof. Our child and family sponsorships take care of these basic necessities, which can include food, access to healthcare, medicine, school supplies, etc. In many cases, these sponsorships enable children to stay with their families or in their communities, instead of being relinquished into an orphanage.
The families are referred through their community members and are assessed by our partner organization. They identify what pressing needs the children have and maximize the sponsorship dollars. Our partner organization checks in often with the families, learning about progress, changes, and evolving needs.
